JusticeForOchanya: When Silence Speaks, and the Internet Doesn’t Forget

How a 13-year-old’s cry for help was ignored, and why her story is trending again

In 2018, Nigeria lost Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Benue State whose only dream was to get an education. Instead, she became the face of one of Nigeria’s most painful cases of child sexual abuse. Living with her aunt and uncle ,a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo , was supposed to give her better schooling. But behind those walls, she faced years of sexual assault allegedly from the lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor. The abuse left her with vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) , a condition rare in children , and led to her death on October 17, 2018. Now, years later, her name is trending again, as Nigerians revisit her story and the justice that still feels unfinished.

Reports revealed that her elder sister, Winifred, also lived in the same house and allegedly knew what was going on. But she stayed quiet. Maybe out of fear, pressure, or confusion, we’ll never know for sure. That detail broke many hearts online.

It exposed how victims often suffer alone, even when those closest to them see the signs. After Ochanya’s death, both her uncle and his son were charged for rape and culpable homicide. But in April 2022, the Benue State High Court acquitted the lecturer, claiming there wasn’t enough evidence. His wife was later convicted for negligence, but to Nigerians, that wasn’t enough. The case resurfaced after activists reignited conversations around child protection, rape culture, and the slow Nigerian justice system. The digital generation isn’t letting it slide this time. This story reminds us that speaking up, even when it’s hard, can save lives.

So, we say her name again , Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje not as a hashtag, but as a promise:We won’t be silent, and we won’t forget.
