13% Fare Hike Hits Lagos BRT as Lagos State Government Increases Price

New fares take effect March 2, 2026, under revised transport pricing

Lagos BRT Fare Hike Starting March 2, 2026, people living in Lagos will have to pay more to use the BRT buses. The government approved a 13% price increase because the cost of fixing buses and paying workers has gone up. While this helps the bus companies stay in business, it adds a new challenge for commuters who are already dealing with high prices in the country.

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13% fare increase on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and other standard routes under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI). The decision was made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after regulated bus operators raised concerns that current fares could no longer cover their rising costs.

According to a statement from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, inflation remains a major reason for the change. 2% in 2025. Bus Operating Companies come dey spend plenty money on repairs, spare parts, and workers’ salaries.  Fare reviews are not new in Lagos. Since the Bus Reform Initiative was introduced, prices have been modified from time to time, especially when the economy is under pressure. In the past, prices went up when inflation increased or when fuel became more expensive.   In essence, this development shows a bigger reality. Public transport pricing is tied closely to the economy. For commuters already managing higher living expenses, this increase may feel heavy.  Transport is more than buses on the road.

It is a mirror of economic choices, policy decisions, and who ultimately carries the weight of rising costs.
